HTML5 Project Brings Tablet Reading Experience to Any Browser

With iPad apps popping out like mushrooms after the rain, a HTML5 project brings a similar tablet reading experience to desktop and mobile broswers.

The Center for Public Integrity has fashioned a template that mimics the in-app reading experience of newspapers – minus, of course, some of the interactive capabilities, such as swiping, offered by touchscreen devices, announces Lauren Indvik on Mashable.com.

One of the main advantages of the HTML5 template is that it is significantly cheaper to produce than a mobile app for a complex operating system like iOS or Android, meaning that more news organizations will be able to render digital, app-like experiences without hiring a developer. The format is also entirely mobile-friendly.

The template was created in conjunction with digital reading platform Treesaver. Treesaver divides content into pages, automatically adjusting the layout to the size of the screen. It works on any device that has a web browser: Desktop PC or Mac, notebook, netbook, iPad and iPhone. It's produced with web standards – HTML, CSS and JavaScript. You can embed video or Flash in it, just as you can with any web site. There is no app to download. No plug in to install.

Have a look...
